About a month ago, as we started sowing, we joked that last year we let the heat kill our harvest, so this year, we’ll give frost a chance. And guess what happened? Fros took that chance.
It has been a cooler spring than last year’s already but last week saw a brief but extremely annoying return of winter with sub-zero temperatures at night, little sunlight, and general gloominess. Emergency plant-covering ensued, during which we realised we really need to stock up on frost blankets. We did our best. Our best wasn’t good enough — especially on the last frosty night when the weather decided to get really destructive by first raining and then getting sub-zero, so the soil could freeze. We bid everything in the garden farewell, except the fruit trees, got depressed, and tried to think about something else. And then…
Potatoes can absolutely survive the frost because potatoes are smart. So are, obviously, weeds. Nothing touches weeds. Except us, because we’re going to turn them into perfect organic fertiliser. Tomato-planting time is coming and they’ll need the extra nutrients.
Sorry to hear about your plant losses. Here in central Oklahoma we went form the 70's F to freezing 29F, & today we may hit 90F. We have a saying in Oklahoma, "If you don't like the current weather, wait a few minutes, it will change."
